Don\u2019t go off script Tom, the truth will come out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Sunday,\u00a0during an appearance on \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d NBC News\u2019 Tom Brokaw<\/a>\u00a0reiterated what he called his long-held belief that \u201cHispanics should work harder at assimilation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was immediately assailed as a racist. \u00a0That\u2019s because the media printed just that one sound bite from the entire paragraph. \u00a0Here\u2019s the rest of it:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one of the things I\u2019ve been saying for a long time. You know, they ought not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And that\u2019s going to take outreach on both sides, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve often wondered why the Hispanic community wasn\u2019t a little angry at the big box retailers like Lowe\u2019s or Home Depot for all of the bilingual signs in their stores.\u00a0 Why are these only in English and Spanish?\u00a0 Do they think that Hispanics won\u2019t learn English?\u00a0 Do they think they can\u2019t?\u00a0 Do they think they are too lazy to learn it?\u00a0 Are they just coddling them, as Brokaw suggests?\u00a0 Are there no Russian or Korean customers in these stores?\u00a0 Where are the signs in their languages?<\/p>\n

In 2015 most Spanish speaking parents spoke Spanish at home to their children.<\/p>\n
